ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the presence of spectators at the final of Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11, offering a major boost to cricket fans despite ongoing austerity measures across the country.
The development was confirmed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in a statement shared on social media. According to Naqvi, he had formally requested the prime minister to allow spectators into stadiums for PSL matches, particularly the final.
Naqvi said the premier was already inclined to permit fan attendance but had raised concerns about nationwide austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and controlling expenditures. These restrictions had earlier cast uncertainty over whether large crowds would be allowed at major sporting events.
“Respected cricket fans, I had requested the prime minister to allow spectators in stadiums,” Naqvi said, adding that while Shehbaz Sharif supported the idea, he remained mindful of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure economic discipline.
However, following a request from PSL franchise owners, the prime minister granted special permission for spectators to attend the tournament’s final. The decision is being seen as a balance between maintaining fiscal restraint and recognising the public’s enthusiasm for cricket.
Naqvi expressed gratitude to the prime minister for the decision, describing it as a positive step for fans and the sport. He also acknowledged the government’s support in facilitating arrangements for spectators, noting that the move would enhance the overall experience of the marquee event.
The announcement has been welcomed by cricket enthusiasts, many of whom had been hoping to witness the high-stakes final live in stadiums. PSL, one of Pakistan’s premier sporting events, consistently draws large audiences and plays a key role in promoting cricket in the country.
While broader austerity measures remain in place, the decision to allow spectators at the PSL 11 final underscores the government’s willingness to make selective exceptions for major national events.
