ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the formation of a steering committee to promote and ensure the effective implementation of artificial intelligence (AI).
He said the government considers progress in information technology and AI as a national priority and is working swiftly to advance these sectors.
Chairing a meeting on the promotion of artificial intelligence, the prime minister instructed that the implementation of the digital economy be made more efficient and integrated with the help of AI.
He also emphasised the need to ensure the early enforcement of a national policy on artificial intelligence.

The prime minister stressed that data protection, data sovereignty, and ethical principles must be prioritised to ensure the safe and responsible use of this technology.
During the briefing, it was informed that an AI Advisory Panel comprising experts is also being established to prepare recommendations related to policymaking and implementation measures.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Bilal bin Saqib, senior officials, and AI experts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that the government is working on a priority basis to promote IT and artificial intelligence, aiming to harness AI for economic growth and to make the digital economy more effective through its integration.
