WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stark warning about a new terrorism threat emanating from Afghan soil while underscoring Pakistan’s pivotal role in mediating international conflicts and promoting global peace.
He was addressing the international forum marking the “International Year of Peace and Trust 2025,” the “International Day of Neutrality,” and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality in Ashgabat. The Prime Minister stated, “A new terrorism threat is rising from Afghan territory.” He urged the international community to press the Afghan government to fulfill its responsibilities in curbing this menace.
PM Sharif positioned dialogue and diplomacy as the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy. “The need today is to let the dove of peace take flight once more,” he asserted. “Peaceful resolution of conflicts is a fundamental pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Dialogue and diplomacy are the best solutions to disputes.”
Highlighting Pakistan’s recent diplomatic successes, he expressed gratitude to Qatar, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran for their cooperation in achieving a ceasefire. “Thanks to joint efforts for a Gaza ceasefire, Palestinians have breathed a sigh of relief today,” he said, noting that a Gaza peace plan was approved with Pakistan’s support. He described UN Security Council Resolution 2788 as an endorsement of Pakistan’s vision and emphasized that securing a sustainable ceasefire and humanitarian aid in the Middle East remains imperative.
On broader global challenges, the Prime Minister identified climate change and inequality as major hurdles for developing nations. “Equitable access to advanced technologies for developing countries is indispensable,” he stressed. He outlined Pakistan’s domestic priorities, including its clean, green development model, financial inclusion, and bringing women into the economic mainstream.
As Pakistan assumes its responsibilities on the UN Security Council this year, PM Sharif reiterated the nation’s full commitment to promoting global peace and security. “Sustainable peace and sustainable development are inseparable,” he concluded, calling for the world to move beyond a zero-sum mindset. “We must build bridges that connect not just trade, but people and ideas. Peace, mutual trust, and shared prosperity are our common destination.”
