PM Shehbaz congratulates Spain on FIFA World Cup 2026 triumph

WEBDESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday congratulatedSpain on winning the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Argentina, praising the team’s outstanding performances and commending the successful hosting of the tournament by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

In a post on X, the prime minister described Spain’s victory as “well-deserved” and lauded the national side for displaying “exceptional skill, unity, discipline, and teamwork” throughout the competition.

PM Shehbaz also congratulated US President Donald Trump and the American people on what he termed the “exceptional arrangements” and successful organisation of the historic tournament. He further acknowledged the governments and people of Mexico and Canada for their partnership in co-hosting the World Cup, saying the three nations had staged the global football spectacle with distinction.

The prime minister also praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the governing body’s team for successfully organising one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

He said the tournament would further strengthen football’s status as a truly global sport and highlighted the unifying power of international sporting events.

“Once again, the FIFA World Cup has reminded us that sport is a universal language, one that transcends borders and inspires humanity,” PM Shehbaz said.

Expressing hope that the values demonstrated during the competition would endure beyond the tournament, he added that the spirit of friendship and unity fostered by the World Cup should continue to guide nations long after the final whistle.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also cheered Spain for winning especially because of their support for Palestine.

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final to lift the trophy, bringing the month-long tournament across the United States, Mexico and Canada to a close.
