ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the National Assembly that Pakistan has been granted “honour and recognition” by God and the entire nation deserves congratulations for it. Following the successful Iran-US ceasefire through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in a speech filled with optimism, PM Sharif said the government had worked to shield the public from rising inflation and that a difficult phase was now ending. “God willing, a substantial reduction in petroleum prices will be announced today.”
He said it would take a lifetime of gratitude to fully thank God for this position, adding that “centuries pass but nations are not always given such respect as Pakistan has received.” He stressed Pakistan’s name is being heard across the world.
The prime minister urged the House to adopt a unanimous resolution on the matter, saying it would send a message of national unity internationally. PM Sharif said he would not be able to name all individuals who worked day and night, but stressed that Field Marshal Asim Munir played a defining role. He said the Field Marshal worked tirelessly for the establishment of peace. “I was present myself; phone calls were coming in and it felt like everything could collapse at any moment,” he added.
Congratulations in order
He also congratulated the deputy prime minister for his contribution, and said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also played an important role regarding Iran.
PM Shehbaz extended congratulations to the opposition leader, other opposition figures and coalition partners. He said he recently spoke by phone with the President of Iran, who repeatedly thanked the Pakistani nation and named the Field Marshal, deputy prime minister and interior minister in appreciation.
PM Sharif thanked provincial governments, as well as the petroleum minister, petroleum secretary and finance minister for ensuring stability in fuel supply during challenging conditions, adding that there were no shortages or long queues at petrol stations. He also credited international partners, including Qatar, China, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, along with US leadership, for their role in easing tensions and stabilising markets.
Inviation to attend Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral
According to the prime minister, the Iranian president invited him to visit Pakistan and said he would come soon to personally thank the people. He also extended an invitation to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei.
PM Sharif said he hoped this process would lead to “streams of economic prosperity.” Addressing the opposition, he said political differences aside, the country must remain united on matters of national importance, adding that unity should be maintained in the national interest.
