PM Shehbaz praises progress after Islamabad MoU talks in Switzerland

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday congratulated all parties on the successful conclusion of the first high-level committee meeting under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, describing the discussions as a significant step towards a peaceful resolution of tensions between the United States and Iran.
The talks, held in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock, took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere and resulted in agreement on a roadmap for a final deal within 60 days, the formal establishment of a High-Level Committee for political oversight, and the start of further technical discussions.
Key outcomes of the Lake Lucerne Summit
Pakistan and Qatar, as mediators, issued a joint statement highlighting the progress made during the intensive sessions.
The meeting builds on the Islamabad MoU signed earlier, which had laid the groundwork for direct engagement aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, and addressing broader issues including sanctions and nuclear concerns.
Pakistan’s pivotal diplomatic role praised
In his statement, Sharif commended the leadership of both the United States and Iran for their commitment to constructive dialogue and thanked brotherly and friendly nations for their support.
He expressed particular gratitude to Qatar for its critical role and to the Swiss Government for hosting the talks.
The prime minister paid special tribute to Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose untiring efforts were instrumental in the success of the negotiations.
He also lauded the diplomatic contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his team at the Foreign Office, as well as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Sharif affirmed, remains committed to playing an honest and sincere role in advancing dialogue and diplomacy for a lasting peaceful resolution.
The development underscores Islamabad’s growing stature as a credible mediator in regional and international conflicts.
