WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced that a final, mutually agreed text of a peace deal between the United States and Iran has been successfully brokered, marking a historic breakthrough in resolving the devastating conflict that erupted earlier this year.
In a statement shared on X, the premier confirmed that Islamabad is now working in lockstep with both Washington and Tehran to streamline the immediate implementation of the accord.
“We can confirm that a final, agreed upon text of the peace deal has been reached and Pakistan is now working closely with both sides to finalize the next steps,” the prime minister wrote. Striking an optimistic tone on the diplomatic achievement, he added, “Peace has never been this close as it is now.”
Confirming the development from Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the two nations are “closer than ever to reaching an agreement to end the war.” He urged international media to refrain from speculative reporting on the specific clauses of the text until the document is officially drafted and signed, promising that full details would be shared with the public in due course.
The announcement comes after months of intensive, high-stakes mediation spearheaded by Pakistan, which successfully brokered an initial ceasefire on April 8 to halt the hostilities that broke out on February 28.
Diplomatic breakthrough and regional stability
The deal, dubbed the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” represents the most significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades. Sources within the government indicate that Prime Minister Shehbaz is likely to depart for Geneva, Switzerland, in the coming days to witness the formal signing ceremony.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also acknowledged the breakthrough from the White House, noting that a “great settlement” had been reached in writing, with formalization expected over the weekend in Europe.
Guarding against sabotage
Despite the buoyant atmosphere, PM Shehbaz sounded a note of caution, warning against active attempts by detractors to derail the fragile peace process at this critical juncture.
He underscored that the government remains fully vigilant against an “incessant misinformation campaign being waged by those who want to sabotage the peace deal.”
Officials from the Foreign Office on Thursday had reiterated that Pakistan’s diplomatic corps is remaining engaged around the clock to ensure the transition from a finalized text to a legally binding, signed treaty proceeds without friction. Global markets have already reacted positively to the news out of Islamabad, with international oil prices dropping sharply and global stock indices rallying on the prospect of a stabilized Middle East.
