PMD forecasts chilling cold wave in upper parts of country


ISLMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that the cold spell will persist in the northern regions of the country over the next 24 hours.

The PMD has indicated that most parts of the country will experience cold and dry weather, with particularly frigid conditions expected in the upper areas. Additionally, there’s a forecast for rain, wind-thunderstorms, and snowfall in isolated areas of northeast Balochistan and Gilgit Baltistan.

During the evening and night, cold winds are expected to sweep through upper Punjab. Shallow fog may linger in isolated areas of Punjab during the morning hours.

The synoptic situation suggests that continental air prevails over most parts of the country, while a shallow westerly wave may affect northeastern Balochistan and southern Punjab.

Over the past 24 hours, the weather remained cold and partly cloudy across the country. Shallow fog was observed in a few plain areas of Punjab. Rainfall was recorded in Rawalakot at 5 mm and Murree at 3 mm. Snowfall was reported in Rawalakot at 1.5 inches and Murree at 0.5 inches.

The lowest minimum temperatures recorded were Kalam at -14°C, Leh at -14°C, Astore at -9°C, Skardu at -7°C, Gupis at -6°C, Malamjabba at -5°C, and Gilgit, Bagrote, and Kalat at -4°C.
