PMD forecasts date for when Ramazan 2026 begins in Pakistan

Ramadan 2026

WEB DESK: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released its forecast regarding the sighting of the Ramazan moon, suggesting that the holy month of Ramazan 1447 AH is likely to begin in Pakistan on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

According to the PMD, the new hilal (moon) is expected to be born on February 17 at 5:01 PM. Based on astronomical calculations and visibility conditions, there is a strong likelihood that the Ramazan crescent will be sighted on the evening of February 18 across various parts of the country.

The department noted that conditions in coastal areas, particularly Karachi, appear favorable for moon sighting. On February 18, the age of the moon at sunset in Karachi is expected to be approximately 26 hours. This exceeds the generally accepted minimum age of around 19 hours considered conducive for crescent visibility. Sunset in the city is forecast at 6:25 pm, while moonset is expected at 7:24 PM, providing a visible window of nearly one hour after sunset for observers.

Meteorologists say such timing significantly improves the chances of spotting the crescent with the naked eye, weather permitting. Similar conditions may also prevail in other parts of southern and central Pakistan, further strengthening the possibility of a confirmed sighting on the same evening.

If the crescent is sighted on February 18, Muslims across Pakistan will observe the first fast of Ramazan on February 19, marking the beginning of the month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

However, as per tradition, the final announcement will be made by the country’s official moon-sighting authorities, Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, after receiving and verifying reports from across the country. The decision will follow established religious procedures, combining eyewitness testimonies with astronomical data.

Ramazan holds deep religious significance for Muslims, and preparations for the holy month typically begin well in advance, including arrangements for prayers, charity, and communal gatherings.
