ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme by one year.
With respect to this decision, the academic session of 2024-2025 will be extended by five years instead of four.
PMDC President Prof Dr. Rizwan Taj in a statement said that the decision was made to address global challenges faced by Pakistani BDS graduates, particularly in securing training and jobs abroad, where a five-year BDS transcript is often required.

Under the new structure, the BDS programme will include a fifth-year designated as a clerkship year. This will be followed by a structured house job or foundation year, along with an internship.
Dr. Taj stated that the additional year would enhance students’ theoretical knowledge of dental sciences and strengthen their academic foundation, enabling excellence in the field. The extended clinical training will prepare graduates to tackle real-world dental challenges with greater confidence and skill.
“This initiative aligns Pakistan’s dental education system with international standards, improving global recognition of Pakistani graduates,” he said. The PMDC has also finalised comprehensive curriculum guidelines, which will soon be shared with dental colleges across the country.
