PESHAWAR: In a tragic turn of events, Peshawar has witnessed a surge in pneumonia-related fatalities, with 46 children succumbing to the condition in three prominent city hospitals this month, as reported by hospital officials.
Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) and Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), each reported a distressing toll of 20 children lost to pneumonia, while Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) in Peshawar recorded an additional six casualties, according to hospital sources.

The gravity of the situation is further underscored by the fact that approximately 700 children, afflicted by pneumonia, are flooding the Outpatient Departments (OPD) of hospitals on a daily basis, as confirmed by hospital officials.

LRH, in particular, is grappling with an overcapacity of children requiring treatment for pneumonia. Hospital authorities express concern over the majority of affected children hailing from suburban areas.
As temperatures drop and the cold intensifies, health officials note a rapid increase in the virulence of the pneumonia infection and high fever. Moreover, they emphasize that immunocompromised children are particularly vulnerable to the debilitating effects of the illness.
