WEB DESK: In a major boost to the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities, the Pakistan Navy’s newly acquired submarine, PNS Hangor, arrived in Karachi, officials said.
The vessel was accorded a grand welcome as it entered Pakistani waters, escorted into port by frontline frigates and Pakistan Naval Aviation Z-9C helicopters.
The induction of the state-of-the-art submarine is being viewed by maritime experts as a significant leap forward in Pakistan’s undersea warfare capabilities, aimed at maintaining the balance of power in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
A grand reception at sea
The arrival of the formidable vessel was marked by high military protocol. Images released by the media wing of the armed forces showed the submarine cutting through the waves, flanked by the navy’s premier surface fleet, while helicopters provided aerial cover.
Senior naval officials, including high-ranking commanders, were present at the dockyard to receive the crew and celebrate the historic transit.
According to a statement issued by the Pakistan Navy, the successful voyage and subsequent docking of PNS Hangor represents the culmination of intense bilateral cooperation and rigorous sea trials.
The vessel is the first of its class, named after the legendary Daphné-class submarine PNS Hangor which famously sank an Indian Navy frigate during the 1971 war, establishing a legacy of naval dominance.
Strengthening regional deterrence
The new PNS Hangor is equipped with advanced weapon systems, stealth technology, and modern sensors, making it a highly potent asset for long-range operations.
Naval analysts suggest that the deployment of this platform will drastically alter the underwater security dynamics of the region, providing Pakistan with a more robust second-strike capability and enhanced surveillance reach.
“Silent beneath the waves, powerful beyond the horizon PNS Hangor is now home,” a senior naval official remarked, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
He added that the submarine’s presence ensures that Pakistan’s maritime frontiers remain impregnable against any external misadventure, reinforcing the navy’s commitment to regional peace through undeniable strength.
