Pochettino calls heavy US defeat a 'reality check ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

WASHINGTON: The US Coach Mauricio Pochettino has described his side’s 5–2 loss to Belgium national football team as a crucial “reality check” with the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching.

The defeat, suffered in a friendly in Atlanta, exposed weaknesses in the US squad just 75 days before their tournament opener.

Despite the heavy scoreline, Pochettino insisted the timing of the loss could prove beneficial, allowing his team to learn and improve before the competition begins.

He acknowledged the disappointment but stressed that performances, at times, were not as poor as the result suggested.

The coach also unfolded the inconsistency in intensity as a key issue, noting that when his players matched Belgium’s level, they were competitive.

The US were without injured players Chris Richards and Tyler Adams, which contributed to a lack of aggression in key moments.

Captain Christian Pulisic endured a frustrating outing, missing a clear chance before Belgium took control of the game.

However, he remained optimistic, emphasizing that he continues to create opportunities and must stay positive.

The US will look to respond in their next friendly against Portugal national football team as they continue preparations for the World Cup, where they will face Paraguay national football team in their opening match.
