SIALKOT: The death toll from a stampede at the mehndi ceremony of popular TikToker ‘Mr Pattlo’ in Sialkot has risen to two, with 17 people reported seriously injured, after a second victim died in hospital, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place on Saturday night at Faraz Cricket Ground on Daska Road, where a large crowd had gathered for the wedding celebrations of Muhammad Ansar Jatt, known on social media as ‘Mr Pattlo’, and a prize-distribution event.
The organisers had announced a lucky draw featuring a car and motorcycles, attracting a large number of the TikToker’s followers from Sialkot and other parts of Punjab.
According to police, a stampede broke out when the venue’s gates were opened and people rushed inside, causing several attendees to fall and others to be trampled in the crush.
The first victim, identified as 30-year-old Aqeel, died while being taken to hospital. Rehan, who was among those injured and was referred to Lahore for treatment because of his critical condition, later died from his injuries, Station House Officer of Motra police station Mubeen Ahmed said.
The second death brought the toll to two.
Rescue 1122 teams and police personnel took the injured to Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital in Sialkot. Some attendees were also reportedly taken to nearby private hospitals and clinics.
Police said a case had been registered at the Motra Police Station against ‘Mr Pattlo’ and more than 40 nominated and unidentified people in connection with the incident. Six people have been arrested, while further investigations are under way.
According to reports, the organisers had promoted the event on social media and attracted a large gathering through announcements of prizes, including a car and motorcycles.
Police have alleged violations of safety procedures and conditions attached to permission for the event.
Sialkot District Police Officer Dost Muhammad said those found responsible for endangering citizens’ lives would be brought to justice.
He said negligence in making security arrangements would not be tolerated.
The district administration has also cancelled permission for the remaining wedding festivities after finding that the event had not followed the approved schedule, according to media reports.
