GILGIT: Renowned Polish climber Waldemar Kowalewski suffered a leg fracture after being caught in an avalanche on Broad Peak this morning between Camp II and Camp III at an altitude of 6,600 to 6,800 meters.

Anwar Syed of Lela Peak Expedition Pakistan confirmed to HUM News English, saying, “One of our expedition team members has suffered a leg fracture on Broad Peak.”

Polish climber Łukasz Supergan, who witnessed the event from base camp, reported that heavy snowfall over the past two days had increased avalanche risks.

“We were sitting outside our tents when we saw the avalanche descend about 6600-6800 meters between Camp II and Camp III. At first, we thought little of it—until we spotted a human figure caught in the snow,” Supergan said in a social media post.

He said upon closer observation, three individuals were seen in the area—one above the avalanche and two others partially buried. Later, only one remained visible as the other two moved to a safer, flatter part of the slope.

“We have confirmation that Waldemar Kowalewski broke his leg. However, he is in a tent at 6,500 m, about 330 meters above the second camp. There are two friends with him: Jarek and Hassan. Jarek takes care of him, and Hassan went to the second camp for gas. At the moment, the situation is stable,” Supergan reported.

The Pakistani Army has been informed, but worsening weather from the south has raised doubts about a timely helicopter rescue. “We don’t know if or when a helicopter can reach them—or if it can even operate at 6,500 meters,” Supergan added.

Funeral prayers of ANP leader Maulana Khan Zeb offered

“Tonight, a multi-member team with a doctor is coming from the base to the top. Unfortunately, due to the threat of daytime stones, the action cannot be started now. However, it looks like the situation upstairs is under control, at least until the rescue team arrives,” he added.
