GILGIT: Candidates from the ruling coalition were elected unopposed to the top legislative slots of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Monday.

Imran Nadeem of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.

Following his election, the outgoing Speaker, Nazir Ahmed Advocate, administered the oath of office to Nadeem, who subsequently assumed charge of the assembly’s chair.

In a parallel uncontested race, Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was elected unopposed as the deputy speaker.

The newly sworn-in Speaker, Imran Nadeem, administered the oath of office to Kifayat-ur-Rehman.

The unopposed elections follow a power-sharing agreement hammered out between the PPP, PML-N, and the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) earlier in the day to form a coalition government in the strategically important northern region.
