WEB DESK: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Sherry Rehman on Thursday accused India of using water as a political weapon against Pakistan, warning that New Delhi’s actions could undermine regional stability and violate international obligations.
In a statement, Rehman said India’s alleged attempts to restrict water flows amounted to a blatant breach of international law and established water-sharing agreements.
She maintained that any effort to exert pressure through water resources would be unacceptable and detrimental to peace in South Asia.
‘Attack on Pakistan’s water rights’
The PPP leader criticised India’s reported plans related to the Chenab–Beas Link Project, describing them as a major assault on Pakistan’s water rights.
She said any move to divert rivers or alter natural water flows could have serious implications for regional stability and the livelihoods of millions dependent on shared water resources.
Rehman said New Delhi’s use of water as leverage represented a failed attempt to coerce Pakistan and warned that such policies risked escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Warning against regional instability
Expressing concern over what she termed India’s “water aggression”, Rehman said the issue was becoming a “ticking time bomb” for peace in South Asia.
She argued that attempts to dominate shared water resources could trigger fresh disputes and deepen mistrust across the region.
The PPP vice president further said India’s approach was contrary to international agreements and humanitarian principles, cautioning that continued provocations on the water front could pose a serious threat to the region’s future and long-term stability.
