PPP’s Yusuf Raza Gilani nominated for Senate Chairman position

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Yusuf Raza Gilani was nominated as the party’s candidate for the position of Chairman Senate on Thursday.
His nomination was announced the party’s Secretariat.
Currently, Gilani enjoys the support of 24 senators from the PPP, 19 from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), four from Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) among other for a total of 54 senators.

He also has potential support from three Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) and five Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) senators.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has the backing of 20 senators.
Gilani served as the prime minister from 2008 till 2012 when he was disqualified by the Supreme Court. Upon assuming office, he initiated an impeachment motion against then-President Pervez Musharraf.
The PPP Senator established the University of Swat in July 2010. He also helped resolved the judicial crisis in March 2009 and advance nuclear energy projects across Pakistan. He also served as the opposition leader in the Senate from 2021 to 2022.
