President approves removal of Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi from SC

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday approved the dismissal of retired Supreme Court Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi, following his misconduct conviction by the Supreme Judicial Council earlier this month.

According to the notification, the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) declared Justice Mazhar Naqvi as guilty of judicial misconduct.

The notification of Mazhar Naqvi’s resignation as a judge was also withdrawn.

Earlier this month, the SJC, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, upheld that the misconduct instances by former justice Naqvi “damaged the reputation of the judiciary.”

In January, following the apex court’s refusal to grant ex-justice Naqvi’s plea for a stay against the SJC proceedings, the former judge resigned, citing circumstances that were widely known to the public, stating it was untenable for him to continue.
