President Zardari chairs high-level meeting on global energy shocks and economic impact

A high-level consultative meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday reviewed the economic implications of fluctuating global oil and gas supplies, with a focus on managing inflationary pressures and ensuring energy security.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir also attended the session, alongside Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Focus on energy security and economic stability

According to an official statement, participants assessed the impact of disruptions in global fuel supply chains and rising petroleum prices on Pakistan’s economy. The meeting emphasised the need to manage inflation effectively while ensuring uninterrupted energy availability.

Officials agreed on maintaining close coordination across sectors, including economic management, energy planning, and food security, to mitigate the effects of external shocks. The evolving regional security situation was also discussed in relation to its potential impact on energy markets.

Call for coordination and public awareness

The meeting underscored the importance of strengthening institutional cooperation and maintaining national consensus to navigate ongoing challenges. Participants stressed the need to raise public awareness about conserving energy, including reducing fuel consumption and promoting the use of public transport.
