President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly criticised India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), describing the use of shared water resources as a weapon as “worrisome.” He issued these remarks in a statement on the occasion of World Water Day.
President Zardari shed light on the growing water crisis and stressed that the impact of water scarcity is uneven, disproportionately affecting women and girls. He noted that in many areas, households still rely on remote or unreliable sources for their water needs. Reiterating the importance of safe and reliable water supply, he called for national-level prioritisation of water infrastructure and management.
WATER MANAGEMENT AND WOMEN’S ROLE
Zardari underlined the need for investment in water systems, effective planning, and active participation of women in decision-making processes. He also stressed the urgency of measures to restore groundwater reserves and improve water levels in reservoirs.
“Population growth and climate change are putting increasing pressure on our water resources,” he said, urging responsible and sustainable water use across all sectors.
INDUS WATERS TREATY CONCERNS
Addressing India’s suspension of the treaty, Zardari said the move violates both the letter and spirit of the international agreement, which has historically ensured fair distribution of the Indus River system between the two countries. He warned that obstructing the treaty’s agreed procedures could threaten the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on these shared water resources.
President Zardari called on India to immediately restore full implementation of the treaty, reaffirming that cooperative water management is essential for regional stability and sustainable development.
