President Zardari says Bhutto denied fair trial in death anniversary message

Bhutto Anniversary

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto did not receive a fair trial, as the nation marked the 47th anniversary of Bhutto’s death.

In a message issued to commemorate the occasion, the president cited the opinion of the Supreme Court, noting that legal requirements were overlooked during Bhutto’s trial. He said the court had also observed that Bhutto’s right to appeal was compromised, raising serious concerns about the judicial process at the time.

President Zardari described the Constitution of 1973 as one of Bhutto’s most significant achievements, calling it a cornerstone of Pakistan’s democratic framework. He stressed that the supremacy of law and justice remains essential for the country’s progress.

Referring to the period following General Zia-ul-Haq’s imposition of martial law, the president said the case was revisited, but the legacy of injustice continued to impact public trust. He warned that denial of justice has far-reaching consequences for society.

The president also paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto for her struggle to restore democracy, urging state institutions to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice in all circumstances.

He added that international leaders had also expressed concern over Bhutto’s trial, reiterating that the strength of democracy depends on the delivery of justice.
