PARIS: Paris St Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique met a serious cycling accident on Friday, suffering a broken collarbone and multiple bruises.
According to the Ligue 1 club, the 55-year-old Spaniard will undergo surgery to repair the fracture.
Following the crash, Luis Enrique received treatment from emergency services. PSG did not immediately provide details on how long he might be sidelined.
Luis Enrique, who took charge of PSG in 2023 and guided them to their first Champions League title last season, is an avid cyclist and often trains on his bike in and around Paris.
He has led PSG to back-to-back league titles and previously guided Barcelona to two consecutive LaLiga crowns, though he narrowly missed out on a third.
‘PSG to continue making history’
Just weeks before the accident, Luis Enrique, while praising his players, voiced strong confidence that PSG can retain the Champions League.
He was impressed by the progress his squad showed after only a week of training following a busy summer, during which they finished as Club World Cup runners-up.
Despite having only a few training sessions, PSG defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, with Luis Enrique praising his team’s fighting spirit as they began their quest for a fifth straight Ligue 1 title.
“I like the way the team fought in the European Super Cup, with little training. That has been the DNA of this team in recent seasons—fighting all the time,” he told reporters on the eve of their league opener away to Nantes.
“What we want now is to get our feel for the ball back … at the moment it’s normal not to be at 100%.”
Luis Enrique admitted he expected a tough start to the Ligue 1 campaign but remained optimistic about securing a win against Nantes, who finished 13th last season.
