PSL 11 shaken by massive changes amidst rising uncertainty; no fans in stadium this season

PCB Chairman

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, has announced that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 will commence on March 26 despite ongoing regional tensions, following extensive consultations with government and security agencies.

Speaking at a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi said the decision to proceed with the tournament was made to avoid a complete disruption of the cricket calendar. He noted that suspending the league would have resulted in a year-long gap.

However, due to the prevailing situation, matches will be held without spectators until conditions improve. Authorities have also decided to cancel the PSL opening ceremony, while assuring fans that those who purchased tickets will receive full refunds.

The PCB also announced that franchises would be compensated for financial losses incurred due to the absence of crowds.

Naqvi confirmed that this year’s PSL matches will be limited to two cities, Lahore and Karachi, explaining that holding games in multiple cities is unnecessary without fan attendance. He added that efforts would be made to include more venues, including Peshawar, in future editions.

Addressing concerns about security, Naqvi maintained that Pakistan remains safe, describing the situation as part of broader regional developments. He expressed confidence in the country’s security institutions and said there were no direct threats to the tournament.

He also revealed that international players are expected to begin arriving within the next few days, while reiterating that the PCB has a strong pool of players available.

In addition, Naqvi warned that disciplinary action would be taken against players who withdrew from PSL contracts to join other leagues. He reiterated that all franchises had been taken into confidence and remained supportive of the board’s decisions.

The PCB chairman also confirmed his return to duties, stating that his health had fully recovered.
