PTA warns users against using unregistered mobile phones

PTA warns

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a fresh warning to mobile phone users across the country, cautioning them about the risks of using unregistered or non-compliant devices.

According to the authority, any mobile phone that is not officially registered under the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) may be blocked from all mobile networks at any time. PTA officials said that only registered and verified devices are permitted to operate under the system.

Unregistered mobile phones are often sold at lower prices because taxes and customs duties on them are not paid. Lower prices also continue to attract low-income users. However, PTA has clarified that the short-term savings come with significant risks. Besides the possibility of sudden blocking, these devices may also experience connectivity issues, affecting call quality, messaging, and mobile data performance.

The PTA has advised users to verify their device status by checking the 15-digit IMEI number, which can be obtained by dialing #06# on the phone. The number can then be checked through the PTA website or by sending it via SMS to 8484.

The authority has urged citizens to ensure their phones are registered before any action is taken against unverified devices. “To avoid disruption in service and ensure seamless connectivity, users should only purchase and use devices that are officially approved and registered,” the PTA stated.

Officials reiterated that responsible digital usage includes compliance with national regulations, and using registered devices protects consumers from inconvenience and financial loss.
