ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Barrister Gohar has rejected a recent article in the British magazine The Economist, calling it an act of character assassination against former first lady Bushra Bibi and announced legal action against the publication.
Barrister Gohar described the piece as malicious and based on falsehoods.
Speaking to a private TV channel, he said the party reserves the right to pursue legal proceedings, adding that the article’s aim was to defame both Bushra Bibi and PTI founder Imran Khan.
He said that Bushra Bibi is facing imprisonment with courage, highlighting that she has previously been subjected to false allegations during her ‘iddat’ period, which she was later cleared of, calling the Economist’s report another fabricated narrative.
Barrister Gohar condemned the timing of such articles while she remains in jail, describing them as sponsored content.
He reiterated that PTI would pursue legal remedies. He also cited BBC’s recent apology for misediting a US president’s speech as an example, asserting that time will prove the Economist report is similarly misleading and baseless.
The British magazine’s special report on Imran Khan’s wife is titled “Sufi, Cricketer and Spy: Pakistan’s Game of Thrones”.
The British magazine claimed that Bushra Bibi played a role in influencing important government decisions during his tenure.
The Economist published a special report on Bushra Bibi, claiming that Imran Khan’s third marriage raised serious questions not only about his personal life but also about his government’s decision-making.
The article claimed that Khan’s marriage to his spiritual adviser had surprised the nation and suggested that she could play a decisive role in determining whether he returns to power or remains behind bars.
