PTI workers attacked tayyab baloch outside adiala jail

RAWALPINDI: Journalists came under attack outside Adiala Jail on Monday when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers allegedly thrashed senior reporter Tayyab Baloch after he posed a question to Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan during her media talk.

According to eyewitnesses, PTI supporters turned violent after the Toshakhana-II case hearing, roughing up Baloch and pushing other journalists, including Ejaz Ahmed and Faisal Hakeem. Cameramen and fellow reporters intervened to shield the assaulted journalist.

The incident triggered a boycott of Aleema Khan’s media talk, with reporters accusing PTI activists of harassment and abusive language.

Some journalists said the party’s social media teams had also been issuing threats for two days prior to the incident.

Police officials, including SP Saddar and ASP with reinforcements, reached the site after the clash.

A formal complaint was being lodged at the Adiala police post, officials confirmed, adding that arrests would be made.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar strongly condemned the assault, calling it “intolerable”.

In a statement on X, he said journalist Tayyab Baloch was assaulted over a difference of opinion. “When arguments end, some elements resort to violence, which only shows their intolerance.”

Assuring full support to Baloch in seeking justice, he said he has always stood by the journalist community and will support them in this case too.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also denounced the incident, terming PTI workers’ behaviour “unacceptable”.

He said such assaults damages the very basis of freedom of press, which he claimed is imperative for the formation of democratic societies.

Additionally, journalist bodies expressed solidarity with Tayyab Baloch, while media representatives demanded action against those responsible.

On social media, the incident sparked widespread criticism of PTI workers’ treatment of journalists.
