WEB DESK: Rumours of the death of renowned Pakistan Television (PTV) newscaster Ishrat Fatima spread rapidly across social media, prompting widespread concern before being swiftly debunked.
The veteran broadcaster, best known for reading the 9 p.m. Urdu news bulletin on PTV during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, issued a lighthearted response to the false reports. In a video call shared by fellow news anchor Tauseeq Haider, Ishrat Fatima reassured fans that she was alive and well, saying, “I just returned home after hosting a radio programme — and I have blankets to wash today.”
The video confirmed that the former PTV icon was in good health, effectively putting an end to the viral misinformation. The incident drew reactions of relief and amusement online, with many social media users calling the rumour “a bizarre case of premature reporting.” Her well wishers rushed to send her prayers, praying for her health as the legendary newscaster said that she urges people to pray for her maintained dignity and respect.
According to a profile by The News International, Ishrat Fatima’s broadcasting journey began by chance while she was still in school. She started at Radio Pakistan, hosting her own show Khel aur Khiladi, where her command of Urdu and natural eloquence quickly stood out. Initially auditioning for the weather segment, which was then audio-only, she decided on a whim to try out as a newsreader too. Her confident delivery and composure won her the role instantly. That spontaneous decision marked the start of a remarkable career, turning her into one of Pakistan’s most recognisable and respected news anchors, with no turning back since.
Her composed and witty response to the death hoax has only strengthened her place as one of Pakistan’s most beloved media personalities.
