A public holiday is being observed across Sindh today (April 4) to mark the 47th death anniversary of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

According to a notification issued by the provincial government, all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils remain closed for the day, except those providing essential services.

Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was executed in 1979. Widely known as “Quaid-e-Awam,” he is remembered for his key contributions to Pakistan’s political and constitutional development.

Born on January 5, 1928, Bhutto received higher education from institutions including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford. He began his political career as one of the youngest ministers in the cabinet of former president Ayub Khan before establishing the PPP in 1967.

Among his most notable achievements was the introduction of the 1973 Constitution, which laid the foundation for a parliamentary and federal system in Pakistan. He is also credited with initiating the country’s nuclear programme, a move seen as pivotal to national security.
