LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced a one-week extension in the winter holidays for all educational institutions across the province, citing student health concerns and harsh weather conditions.

According to the decision, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in Punjab will now reopen on January 19, instead of the previously scheduled January 12.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said the decision was taken after public consultation through a survey conducted on his official social media platform. He noted that the move reflects the government’s commitment to prioritising the health and safety of students during the ongoing spell of severe cold and fog.

“After reviewing public feedback and keeping the weather conditions in mind, it was decided to extend the holidays in the best interest of students,” the minister said.

The survey results showed overwhelming public support for the extension. According to official figures, 87 per cent of participants favored reopening educational institutions on January 19, while 13 per cent supported resuming classes from January 12. In total, 154,178 votes were cast in favor of the January 19 reopening, compared to 24,829 votes for January 12.

Following the announcement, the Education Minister has directed Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Education across Punjab to ensure strict implementation of the decision in their respective districts.

The extension has been welcomed by parents and students alike, many of whom have raised concerns over low temperatures, dense fog, and increased health risks during winter mornings.
