LAHORE: The Punjab government has been criticised after proposing a plan to purchase new vehicles worth Rs300 million for cabinet members and VIPs, shortly after acquiring a government aircraft reportedly costing around Rs10 billion.
According to media reports, the provincial Transport Wing has recommended the purchase of 28 vehicles for cabinet use. The proposal includes two bulletproof vehicles, estimated at around Rs40 million, intended for ministers. Sources indicate that approval for these high-security vehicles has already been granted, while a broader fleet of 25 vehicles worth Rs270 million for VIP use has also received preliminary approval.
The proposed spending has triggered debate in political and public circles, with critics questioning the timing and priorities of the government. Many argue that such expenditures come at a time when citizens are facing economic challenges, including inflation and rising living costs.
In addition, a separate proposal worth Rs530 million has been put forward to procure vehicles, including motorcycles, for the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team. If approved, this would further increase government spending on transport resources.
Opposition voices and analysts have raised concerns about transparency and fiscal responsibility, urging the government to justify the need for such purchases. Some have called for a reallocation of funds toward public welfare sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
Government officials, however, maintain that the purchases are necessary for official duties and operational efficiency. They state that final approval from the cabinet is still pending, after which the procurement process will begin.
The issue has added to ongoing scrutiny over government spending, particularly following last year’s purchase of a high-cost official aircraft, which also drew public criticism.
