WEB DESK: The State of Qatar has clarified that it is not currently acting as a direct mediator between the United States and Iran, shifting its immediate diplomatic weight towards national security and the protection of its own borders.
During a weekly press briefing held on Tuesday, Dr Majid bin Mohammed Al Ansari, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the intensifying regional conflict.
He emphasised that while Qatar remains a steadfast proponent of de-escalation, it is not presently facilitating the direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran that have been the subject of recent international speculation.
Focus on sovereignty and regional stability
Dr Al Ansari noted that the government’s primary objective is currently the “defence of the country” and addressing the fallout from recent military strikes.
Reports indicate that Qatar has faced more than 200 missile and drone attacks in recent weeks, with over 90pc successfully countered by national air defences. This shift in focus follows the targeting of key infrastructure, including the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial areas.
Despite the absence of a formal mediation role in this specific crisis, the spokesperson reiterated that Doha’s “crystal clear” position remains rooted in the necessity of a diplomatic resolution.
“All conflicts are eventually resolved at the negotiating table,” Dr Al Ansari stated, adding that Qatar continues to support both official and unofficial channels that aim to bring an end to the hostilities.
The briefing also highlighted that while Qatar maintains close coordination with the US administration regarding regional security and the protection of Qatari territory, other regional actors including Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey are currently more active in the direct mediation efforts to halt the escalation.
