ISLAMABAD: Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) stands as the solitary Pakistani institution to secure a position among the top 100 universities in the latest QS Asia University Rankings for the year 2024.

QAU clinched the 86th position, marking a noteworthy achievement amidst a concerning trend for Pakistani higher education. While other Pakistani institutions, such as Iqra University in Karachi and Allama Iqbal Open University, were ranked in the 301-350 and 801+ brackets, respectively.

The drop from 15 universities in 2023 to only three in 2024 raises pertinent questions about the country’s education standards and global competitiveness.

In contrast, India’s dominance with 148 institutions emphasizes a substantial gap that necessitates attention. India’s success extends globally, with its universities securing the 315th position in the overall QS World University Rankings, showcasing a stark contrast to Pakistan’s current trajectory.

The top position in the QS Asia University Rankings was claimed by Peking University, closely followed by The University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Why no higher education institute other than Islamabad’s Quaid-i-Azam University has made it up the rankings is a question that needs seriously deliberations in Pakistan.
