Veteran radio personality Bob Labbe has been named Large-Market Radio Personality of the Year in Alabama, capping a career that has spanned more than five decades on air.
The 72-year-old received the honour from the Alabama Broadcasters Association at its annual Abby Awards in Birmingham, recognising his long-standing contribution to broadcasting.
A 53-year career built on consistency
Labbe has spent 53 years in the industry, working across radio, television and print. He has also built a reputation as a sports reporter for the Madison Record, making him a familiar name in Alabama’s media circles.
Despite his experience, Labbe said the recognition came as a surprise and described it as especially meaningful compared to past awards.
He is best known for hosting Reelin’ In The Years on WLRH-FM in Huntsville, a programme he has led continuously for 35 years. Airing every Friday night in a four-hour slot, the show has remained a consistent fixture for listeners.
From childhood dream to 20,000-record archive
A defining feature of the programme is Labbe’s personal collection of more than 20,000 vinyl records, spanning music from the 1950s to the 1990s.
Using his own archive, he curates playlists, shares stories about artists and songs, and engages directly with listeners in a format that reflects classic radio.
Labbe said his passion for broadcasting began early, recalling how he would pretend to host his own radio shows as a child.
“I used to play radio in my room as a kid and always wanted to be a disc jockey,” he said, adding that his current role has allowed him to live out that ambition.
With decades behind the microphone and a loyal audience still tuning in, Labbe’s latest award highlights a career defined by longevity and dedication.
