ISLAMABAD: Rawalpindi and Islamabad witnessed torrential rain for a fifth consecutive day, with the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi remaining on high alert and a rain emergency still in effect, WASA Managing Director Azizullah Khan said.

Khan said WASA staff and heavy machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas across the city, including Gawalmandi, Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Mall Road and Sadiqabad. Drainage machinery and personnel have also been stationed in City Saddar Road, Dhoke Khabba, Millat Colony and Arya Mohallah, he added.

Nullah Lai and other drains across the city are being continuously monitored, according to Khan, who said the water level in Nullah Lai was recorded at 13 feet near Katarian and 11 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge.

Citing data from the Meteorological Department, Khan said Saidpur recorded 12mm of rainfall, Golra 61mm, Bokra 36mm, the PMD office 37mm, Shamsabad 52mm, Kutchery 14mm, Pirodhai 29mm, Gawalmandi 35mm and New Katarian 26mm.

A WASA spokesperson said the managing director is personally in the field, overseeing the drainage operation, and that the agency is working alongside the district administration and other institutions to remain prepared for any emergency situation. Citizens facing any emergency were urged to immediately contact the WASA helpline at 1334.

Meanwhile heavy rain returned to Swabi flooding several parts of the city and leaving water accumulated in low-lying areas. Residents faced difficulties in commuting as the downpour intensified drainage problems across various localities, while rainwater turned the roads of Marghuz Thandkoi into what looked like a pond. With rain continuing in the area, citizens have been advised to exercise caution.
