The Rawal Dam spillways will be opened at 11am on Tuesday after heavy rainfall in the catchment area pushed the reservoir’s water level close to its maximum storage capacity.

According to an official notice, the water level at Rawal Dam reached 1,751.90 feet on September 1, prompting authorities to open the spillways to manage the rising water level.

The dam’s maximum storage level is 1,752 feet.

Heavy rain in twin cities

Islamabad and Rawalpindi have received heavy rainfall since early Tuesday, with the downpour also increasing inflows into Rawal Dam. The administration has directed all relevant departments and concerned authorities to take necessary precautionary measures ahead of the spillway opening.

The move comes as authorities across the twin cities remain on alert following widespread flooding in low-lying areas and rising water levels in Nullah Lai.

Officials are monitoring the situation and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow safety instructions and take necessary precautions.
