Real Madrid’s strict hiring rules complicate move for José Mourinho and other top candidates

Real Madrid are facing growing complications in their search for a new head coach, as a set of strict internal conditions limits their options among several high-profile candidates, according to journalist Joaquín Maroto.

The club is preparing for a managerial change at the end of the current season following the expected departure of Alvaro Arbeloa. While former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is currently viewed as the leading candidate, other prominent names such as José Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino, and Didier Deschamps are also under consideration.

Club president Florentino Pérez is said to be taking a more direct role in the selection process this time, rather than delegating decisions to a wider advisory group. However, the final shortlist is being shaped by a set of rigid requirements that significantly reduce flexibility in negotiations.

No release clauses and immediate availability requirement

One of the key conditions set by Real Madrid is that the club will not pay any release clause to secure a new manager. This immediately complicates a potential return for Mourinho, who reportedly has a €6 million exit clause in his current contract with Benfica.

In addition, the Spanish giants want their next coach appointed immediately after the season ends. The idea is to ensure full involvement in pre-season planning, squad restructuring, and transfer decisions ahead of the summer window and the 2026 FIFA World Cup period.

This timing requirement creates further obstacles for both Pochettino and Deschamps. Pochettino is expected to lead the United States men’s national team at the World Cup, while Deschamps is set to manage France in the same tournament. Neither would be available to take charge immediately after the club season concludes, which does not align with Real Madrid’s timeline.

Klopp remains frontrunner as alternatives narrow

Despite these constraints, Klopp remains the preferred option within the club hierarchy. Real Madrid are reportedly aiming to reach an agreement with him by early June to ensure a smooth transition and allow early preparation for recruitment ahead of the global tournament.

Mourinho, meanwhile, is said to be open to a return to the Santiago Bernabéu and has indicated his willingness to take the job. However, Madrid’s refusal to pay transfer fees for managers presents a significant barrier to any deal.

With these limitations in place, the club’s list of viable candidates is steadily shrinking. While Real Madrid continue to evaluate their options, their strict financial and timing criteria are shaping what is becoming a highly constrained managerial search ahead of a crucial new season.
