QOM: A red flag has been raised atop the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, a potent Shia symbol long associated with the blood of martyrs and the pursuit of justice for those wrongfully killed. The gesture comes amid heightened tensions following the reported assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iranian vows of retaliation against the United States and Israel.
In Shia and Iranian tradition, red banners, often bearing the inscription “Ya la‑thārāt al‑Ḥusayn” (“O avengers of Husayn”), signify both the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at Karbala and a call for vengeance. Flags of this type are typically displayed during the mourning month of Muharram or other religious events; raising one outside of these occasions, especially at a prominent shrine, is widely interpreted as a symbolic declaration of resolve and retribution.
Iranian officials have also publicly vowed a strong response to the attack that killed Khamenei, describing it as a violation of a “red line.” The Speaker of Parliament stated that “Operation True Promise 4” was launched just hours after the Supreme Leader’s death and warned that it represents only the initial phase of Iran’s military response. He pledged that further actions would continue against American and Israeli targets, asserting that painful reprisals are forthcoming.
In Tehran, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council emphasized that Iran’s armed forces are fully prepared to defend national sovereignty with “unprecedented force,” accusing the United States and Israel of efforts to weaken and divide the country. “There will be no leniency,” he said.
The Iranian Army also reiterated that Khamenei’s death “will not go unanswered,” underlining a commitment to national independence and territorial unity. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed attacks on an ammunition ship in the Indian Ocean and on a US naval base in Kuwait’s Abdullah Mubarak area as part of its initial response operations.
