Reham Khan launches political party

KARACHI: Reham Khan, social activist, journalist and the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, on Tuesday announced her own political party, the Pakistan Republic Party, pledging to represent the public and challenge the dominance of the ruling elite.

Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, she said her party aimed to highlight public issues and hold those in power accountable.

“Whatever work one starts, it should begin with the name of Allah,” she said, calling the party a response to growing public discontent.

Reham said she chose Karachi to begin her political journey, citing the city’s support during difficult times.

Reflecting on her personal journey, she said she joined the BBC in 2012 and later spent four years in Pakistan with her mother, which deepened her bond with the country. “I have seen the country from 2012 to 2025,” she added.

She recalled a moment when a child advised her not to become like traditional politicians, stressing that her party would represent all marginalised regions. “All provinces are deprived,” she said.

Reham criticised the concentration of political power and influence, stating that “only five families are sitting in the assemblies.” She also pointed to the rising cost of living, unregulated sugar prices, and weak tax enforcement by the FBR as signs of systemic failure.

She said the Pakistan Republic Party seeks to offer a new leadership model based on public service rather than feudal or commercial interests. “The public discourse has been reduced to TV debates and ministerial ambitions,” she added.
