ISLAMABAD: A resolution proposing the ban of major social media platforms in the country, including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, the platform formerly known as Twitter (referred to as X), and YouTube, has been added to the agenda for the Senate meeting scheduled to take place on March 4.
According to Geo News, the resolution was introduced by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Bahramand Tangi.
In the resolution, the senator has proposed banning mainstream social media platforms due to their potential misuse against the country’s interests, with the aim of protecting the young generation from their negative and harmful effects.

Even if approved, the resolution will not carry any legal obligation. It also highlighted that these platforms are being utilized for vested interests to disseminate fake news on various issues.
PPP allegedly revoked Senator Tangi’s basic party membership for breaching party discipline and failing to respond to a show-cause notice issued to him regarding his silence on a resolution advocating for a delay in the February 8 polls.
