Retired general appointed as Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority DG

ISLAMABAD: Major General (retd) Zafarullah Khan has been appointed as the Director General of the Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority, according to the official notifications issued by the Establishment Division on Thursday.

The development is part of the ongoing large-scale postings and transfers the federal government has been making since the last few days.

The Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority was established in March 2024 following the official promulgation of an ordinance by then-president Arif Alvi.

In September 2024,  the National Assembly passed the Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority Bill, 2024 to regulate the cultivation of cannabis and the sale of its extracts for medicinal use.

Similarly, Grade 20 Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, Raja Tanveer Azmi, has been relieved of his position and instructed to report to the Establishment Division.

In another development, the services of Rana Manzoor Ahmed Khan, a Grade 20 officer from the Military Lands and Cantonments Group, have been returned to the Military Cantonment Department.

He was previously serving as Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Division.

Earlier in the day, Inspector General Police Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi issued a notification for the transfer of high-level officers of the federal capital’s police. 

According to the notification, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Ali Raza was reassigned as DIG Security and Headquarters.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Jawad Tariq was appointed as the new DIG Operations Islamabad.

In another key posting, Shoaib Khan was appointed as SSP Operations Islamabad.

A formal notification was issued regarding the changes.

Yesterday, the government removed Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) Director General Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir and Inspector General (IG ) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Akhtar Hayat from their posts.

Notifications to this effect was issued by the Cabinet Division.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had granted his approval in this regard.

According to sources, DG FIA was removed over his poor performance regarding incidents of human trafficking. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had expressed his anger over the reports submitted by the DG FIA Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir and had instructed for his removal.

IG KP Akhtar Hayat had also been removed from his post and has been directed to report to the establishment division, according to the notification.
