Riyadh hosts emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic Leaders

WEB DESK: Saudi Arabia has convened an emergency summit of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Riyadh today, as the region grapples with its most significant security threat in decades.

According to Arab News, the high-stakes gathering, announced by the Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry, seeks to establish a unified front to bolster regional stability and prevent the current cycle of violence from spiralling into an all-out continental war.

The talks follow a period of unprecedented military escalation, initiated by a joint US-Israeli strike on Iran on 28 February, which triggered a fierce retaliatory campaign from Tehran involving waves of missile and drone strikes across the Gulf.

A region on the brink

The humanitarian and economic fallout of the conflict has been immediate and severe. Major international aviation and cargo hubs, including those in Dubai and Doha, have been forced into repeated closures, causing significant disruption to global trade and the delivery of essential medical supplies.

In the lead-up to Wednesday’s meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan engaged in a series of urgent diplomatic discussions with counterparts from across the Middle East and Europe including representatives from Egypt, Iraq, and the UAE to coordinate a collective response.

This ministerial meeting represents a critical attempt to find a diplomatic exit strategy and secure a de-escalation of hostilities before the crisis reaches a point of no return.
