Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon, in what police have described as an apparent homicide, according to US media reports.
TMZ reported that law enforcement officials confirmed the identities of the two victims as the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and his wife. The Los Angeles Fire Department said a man and a woman, aged approximately 78 and 68, were found deceased at the property at around 3.30 pm.
In a brief statement cited by local media, the Los Angeles Police Department said detectives from its Robbery Homicide Division were handling the investigation.
“At this time, no further details are available as this is an ongoing RHD investigation into an apparent homicide,” police said.
Emergency crews were first called to the home on Chadbourne Avenue after firefighters discovered the bodies. LAPD officers were dispatched shortly afterwards for what police refer to as an “ambulance death investigation”.
A heavy police presence remained at the scene on Sunday evening as detectives continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. No arrests have been announced and authorities have not commented on a possible motive.
Rob Reiner, the son of late comedian Carl Reiner, rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards. He later became one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, with films including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally.
Reiner married photographer Michele Singer in 1989. The couple had three children together: Jake, Nick and Romy. He also has a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to director Penny Marshall.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
