LONDON: Manchester City midfielder Rodri has fueled speculation about his future by admitting he would welcome a return to Spain, with his current contract entering its final year.
The 29-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in world football, acknowledged that discussions over his next step are approaching as his deal at City winds down.
“I have a year left on my contract; there will come a point when we’ll have to sit down and talk,” Rodri said, leaving the door open to a potential exit.
A Madrid native, Rodri revealed that a return to La Liga, and particularly to the Spanish capital, holds strong appeal.
“Would I like to play in Spain again, in LaLiga, in Madrid? I’d like to return, yes, obviously.”
His comments are likely to put Real Madrid on alert, with the European giants constantly seeking to strengthen their midfield for the long term. Despite his past with Atlético Madrid, Rodri suggested that switching allegiances within the city would not be out of the question.
“You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world,” he added.
Since joining Manchester City in 2019, Rodri has been a cornerstone of their success, helping the club win multiple major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and four Premier League titles.
However, uncertainty now surrounds his long-term future, particularly as he continues his recovery from a serious ACL injury suffered in 2024.
While no formal approach has been made, Rodri’s remarks will inevitably intensify transfer speculation in the months ahead, with Real Madrid a natural destination should he decide to leave England.
