India’s veteran batsman Rohit Sharma has come under scrutiny following a disappointing showing in the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand. The former captain managed just 11 runs in the series-deciding third ODI, raising questions about his hunger and motivation as the 2027 World Cup approaches.
Having retired from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit now plays only in ODIs for India. While he had a strong performance against Australia last year, earning Player of the Series honors, his form dipped in subsequent series. He scored 146 runs across three matches against South Africa but could muster only 61 in three games versus the Black Caps.
Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull, commentating on Star Sports, questioned whether Rohit still has the same drive to chase major milestones. “Rohit has always had goals to pursue, whether it was a T20 World Cup or a 50-over World Cup,” Doull said. “I just wonder if the 2027 World Cup in South Africa feels too distant. Does he still have that hunger?”
Doull noted the challenges of maintaining form in a limited schedule. “There’s very little one-day cricket over the last few months, and that continues for the next few months. Opportunities in this format are scarce, so the next time we’ll see him in an Indian jersey might be in July in the UK – it’s a long gap,” he added.
Despite Rohit’s struggles, Virat Kohli led India’s batting in the series, scoring 240 runs at an average of 80, including a century in the final ODI, though India lost the match.
Rohit’s future in ODIs will be closely watched as India builds toward upcoming ICC tournaments, with fans hoping the experienced opener can regain his signature touch.
