Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he plans to retire “soon”, as the Portugal and Al Nassr icon prepares for what he expects will be an emotional farewell to his glittering career.
Speaking to Piers Morgan Uncensored, the 40-year-old admitted he is nearing the end of his journey in professional football. Ronaldo, who has scored an extraordinary 952 goals and is regarded as one of the most decorated players of all time, said he has been preparing himself mentally for retirement.
Asked when he intends to hang up his boots, Ronaldo — under contract with Al Nassr until 2027 — replied:
“Soon. But I think I will be prepared. It will be tough, of course. It will be difficult, yes. I will probably cry. I’m an open person and it will be very, very difficult.
But Piers, I have been preparing my future since I was 25, 26, 27. So I believe I’ll be capable of handling that pressure.”
Ronaldo said he is confident he will adapt to life beyond football, focusing on his family and his interests off the pitch.
“Nothing can match the adrenaline of football or scoring a goal,” he said. “But everything has a beginning and an end. I have other passions. I’ll have more time for myself, for my family, to raise my kids.
I want to follow Cristiano Junior closely because he’s at an age where kids do stupid things — I was the same. Mateo loves football too.
I want to do more fun things. I love playing padel with my closest friends — we’re getting quite good.”
Ronaldo began his career at Sporting Lisbon before starring for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. His first spell at United brought three Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.
He moved to Al Nassr in 2022 after leaving United for the second time. Despite playing in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo still follows United’s fortunes — especially with his former Portugal team-mate Ruben Amorim now managing the club.

However, he cautioned fans not to expect instant transformations under Amorim.
“He’s doing his best. But what can he do? Miracles? Miracles are impossible,” Ronaldo said. “They have good players, but some of them don’t understand what Manchester United really is.
Manchester United is still in my heart. I love that club. But we all have to be honest — they’re not on the right path. They need change, and in my opinion, it’s not only about the coach and players.”
