Actor Ruby Rose has accused pop star Katy Perry of sexual assault, alleging the incident took place nearly two decades ago. The singer has strongly denied the claims, calling them “dangerous” and “reckless lies”.
Rose details allegations
The Orange Is the New Black star said in a series of posts on Threads on April 12 that the alleged incident occurred at a nightclub in Melbourne when she was in her early 20s.
Rose said it had taken her “almost two decades” to speak publicly, describing the long-term impact of trauma.
“It has taken almost two decades to say this publicly,” she wrote, adding that sharing the experience reflected how deeply sexual assault can affect survivors.
In further posts, Rose alleged the incident took place at Spice Market nightclub and claimed it happened in a public setting, saying there were “multiple people” who witnessed it.
She also suggested she has evidence, writing that Perry would not pursue legal action because “it happened” and was “literally in public”.
Perry calls claims ‘categorically false’
In a statement, a representative for Perry rejected the allegations outright.
“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies,” the statement read.
The representative also claimed Rose had a history of making allegations against individuals that were denied.
Rose on reporting and speaking out
Rose later said she had gone to a police station to explore whether any investigation could be pursued into her experiences of assault, although she acknowledged some incidents may fall outside the statute of limitations.
“I did it,” she wrote, confirming she had reported the matter, adding that the process in Australia had been “ok”.
In other posts, Rose reflected on the difficulty of speaking about alleged abuse involving women, saying it can feel “100 times harder” than speaking about male perpetrators.
She also said she was not initially focused on filing a formal report over the alleged incident, but rather on speaking out.
Past controversies resurface
The allegation has renewed attention on earlier claims involving Perry. In 2019, actor Josh Kloss accused the singer of misconduct linked to her ‘Teenage Dream’ music video.
Separately, Georgian TV presenter Tina Kandelaki alleged inappropriate behaviour at an industry event.
In 2018, during an audition for American Idol, Perry kissed contestant Benjamin Glaze without warning. He later said he felt uncomfortable but did not consider it sexual harassment.
Perry has not directly addressed those earlier allegations, previously saying she did not want to distract from the wider #MeToo movement.
Background on Rose
Rose, who has starred in Batwoman and films including Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and John Wick: Chapter 2, has previously made allegations about workplace conditions following her departure from the CW series in 2020.
Warner Bros. disputed those claims at the time, citing workplace behaviour concerns.
The latest allegation remains unproven, with no official investigation confirmed.
