Russell Brand has admitted to a past sexual relationship with a 16-year-old when he was 30, describing the encounter as “exploitative” despite it being legal at the time in the United Kingdom.
The British comedian made the remarks during an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, where he addressed criticism over his past conduct.
He noted that while the age of consent in the UK is 16, he now views the situation differently.
“I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30,” Brand said, adding that he was “a very different person” at the time and described himself as immature.
‘I recognise it was exploitative’
Brand went on to reflect on his past behaviour, acknowledging a pattern of conduct he now regrets.
He said that even when relationships were consensual, significant age and power differences could still make them problematic.
“Consensual sex… when there is a strong power differential, I think, involves exploitation,” he said, adding that his actions were “selfish” and lacked consideration for others.
Charges and upcoming trial
The comments come as Brand faces multiple criminal charges.
In April 2025, he was charged with rape, indecent assault and sexual assault involving four women in alleged incidents between 1999 and 2005.
Additional charges, including rape and sexual assault, were filed later that year relating to incidents in 2009.
Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His trial, originally scheduled to begin in June at Southwark Crown Court, has been postponed and is now expected to start in October.
