ISLAMABAD: Russia has granted Pakistan permission to export seafood, a move expected to boost shipments to as much as $800 million, the maritime affairs minister said on Friday.
Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the development as a “historic breakthrough” for Pakistan’s fisheries sector, saying exports of fish and seafood to Russia would begin for the first time.
He said that 16 Pakistani companies had received clearance to export seafood to the Russian market, opening new avenues for the country’s exports.
Following access to Russia, Pakistan also expects to expand exports to other members of the Eurasian Economic Union, further strengthening its seafood sector, Chaudhry said.
“Pakistan’s Marine Fisheries Department ensures compliance with international standards for seafood exports, which is critical for competing in global markets,” he added.
Pakistan’s annual seafood exports are projected to exceed $500 million, and could rise to $800 million after entry into the Russian market, the minister said.
Initial exports to Russia alone are expected to generate around $300 million in revenue, he said.
Chaudhry said exports would be carried out through sea, air and land routes, adding that overland access to Central Asian countries would provide a cost-effective trade corridor.
He noted strong demand for Pakistani seafood in countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which could further expand export opportunities.
Pakistan’s ports play a key role in regional trade, and the country’s warm-water fish species have the potential to remain competitive in international markets, he said, expressing hope that improved infrastructure and adherence to global standards would drive further growth in seafood exports.
