Sadie Sink has revealed that she learned about her casting in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in an unexpected way, days before Marvel officially approached her.
The Stranger Things star, 23, has already wrapped filming on the upcoming Spider-Man instalment, which sees Tom Holland return as Peter Parker. However, Sink’s role remains tightly under wraps.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sink explained that she first became aware of her potential involvement through online speculation rather than a formal offer.
“I found out through online theories,” she said. “Before I got cast in Spider-Man, there was speculation online that said, ‘Sadie Sink is going to be in the new Spider-Man.’ I was like, ‘Hmm? I am?’ And then two days later, they asked me to do it.”
She added that while internet rumours are often inaccurate, “sometimes there’s some truth to it”.
‘It’s been torture keeping the secret’
Sink admitted that staying silent about the project has been challenging, especially with constant fan theories circulating online.
“It’s been torture not being able to say anything,” she said, noting that while close friends and family are aware of her role, she has been unable to share details publicly. “There’s so much speculation too. I feel like there’s a new character every week.”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sink suggested that keeping Marvel secrets has made guarding spoilers for the final season of Stranger Things feel comparatively easy.
“I feel like keeping Stranger Things secrets is kind of easy because I have so many Spider-Man secrets I’m sitting on that feel even more secretive,” she said.
What we know so far
Sink previously worked with Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton on the 2017 film The Glass Castle, when she was 14.
The Marvel film also stars Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal and Jacob Batalon.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set for release on 31 July.
